Black & Decker are one of the largest manufacturer of power tools, which are used both in the home and commercially/industrially. Their products can be purchased in more than a hundred countries.
From humble beginnings in 1910 when Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker opened a shop on Calvert Street, Baltimore and began making specialised machinery. The initial investment made by them was $1,200. Their line of products manufactered included contracts for specific machines built for other companies, such as a lettergraph, a milk-bottle capping device, postage stamp machine, and a machine built for the US Mint.
By 1916 they had produced a 1/2" electric drill which was highly portable with a trigger and pistol grip. Further much more portable tools suitable for use by mass market was developed between 1916 and 1953 including a patented Black & Decker electric hammer. One noteable point was in 1946 when Black & Decker made a major step forward by introducing the portable electric drill specifically aimed at general consumers.
By 1953 with the addition of sanders and jigsaws Black & Decker had become a major force in the do-it-yourself market.
